Beat Hunger canned food drive
Appalachian Student Ambassadors, Appalachian State University
According to the US Census, 21.2% of people in Watauga County are living in poverty. But,
there is a way you can help decrease this statistic. The Appalachian State University Student
Ambassadors are hosting their annual canned food drive, themed “Beat Hunger.” The canned
food drive is a university-wide initiative that helps relieve hunger and give back to the
surrounding community. All cans donated go directly to the Watauga Hunger and Health
Coalition, benefiting families in Watauga, Avery, and Ashe counties. Last year the canned food
drive raised over 9,000 pounds of food. We want to build upon this record donation.
During the week of November 5th through 9th, the Student Ambassadors will have donation
tables located outside of both campus markets. Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. you can drop off
non-perishable food items outside of the market in the campus bookstore. Between 4 p.m. and
10 p.m. items may be donated outside of the market in Trivette dining hall. On November 3rd
and 11th you can donate items outside of Ingles grocery store between noon and 3 p.m. On
November 4th and 11th you can donate items outside of Food Lion on Highway 321 between
noon and 3 p.m. Also, bring your items to the November 10th Appalachian State football game,
and the Ambassadors will collect them on your way into the stadium.
As an incentive, the “Beat Hunger” canned food drive offers various raffle prizes for students
who donate. The top prize provides a lucky ASU student with two tickets to the Chancellor’s
Suite for the Black Saturday football game against Furman University and lunch with Chancellor
Peacock at a later date. Everyone who donates will also be entered to win gift certificates to
restaurants and local businesses.
