Jose Kozer - Lecture on Cuba & exile
José Kózer, the 2013 Pablo Neruda Ibero-American Poetry Award winner, will offer a bilingual poetry reading and author talk during a two-day visit to campus sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
The poetry reading is Monday, Nov. 4, followed by a discussion of Poetry and Exile Tuesday Nov. 5. Both events begin at 7 p.m. in the Belk Library Lecture Hall 114.
José Kozer was born in 1940 in Havana, Cuba, of Jewish parents who emigrated from Poland (father) and Czechoslovakia (mother). He left his native land in 1960 and lived in New York until 1997, the year in which he retired as full professor from Queens College, where he taught Spanish and Latin American literatures for 32 years.
He is author of more than 60 books of poetry published by some of the most prestigious publishing companies in the Spanish-speaking world. His poetry has been partially translated to English, Portuguese, German, French, Italian, Hebrew and Greek. Some of it has been anthologized in some of the most important anthologies in the world; one by Norton, one by Gallimard (France) and one by Oxford University Press (England). It has also appeared with Fischer Verlag (Germany) where only 15 poets of the Latin American 20th Century appeared.
His work has been studied in many graduate and undergraduate courses, and is the object of several dissertations and monographic literary symposiums.
The New York-based Junction Press published a bilingual (Spanish/English) anthology of Kozer’s work entitled Stet: Selected Poems. It was edited and translated by Mark Weiss. Shearman Editorial (England) published a bilingual edition of Ánima, translated into English by Peter Boyle. Ediciones Matanzas has just published his latest book of poems, Índole, with a critical study by ASU professor Andrés Fisher.
